We stopped three times before we made it back to Moscow. Smoke had blanketed the sky and eventually it reached the city. The wind had blown it after us and I almost thought it could have been my mother. One final look over us before she was gone forever.
We changed out of thick snow gear, changed Hope and left the building walking underground a short distance until we came to a cellar of some sorts and walked up through a wine cellar and then eventually came out into a restaurant. Monty had found and chose this spot for their underground connected cellars and paid off the building owners to create doorways that connected between them all. It wasnât long until we were in the loft and I could finally sit down. I hadnât gone to the toilet yet but the feeling had quickly risen the second I started to relax.
âWhat is it?â Mason asked frowning.
âI need to pee. And shower. I feel...dirty.â
âWeâll stay with hope.â Keenan smiled warmly at me before he gingerly sat down beside me and held his hands out for Hope.
He was so gentle with her, immediately doing a soft rock when she started to stir. Then he did the shh, shh sound and she was back asleep.
âYouâre a natural.â I said smiling.
âSheâs perfect, Lake. Though Iâm afraid she looks like him.â Mason scoffed.
âI take great offence to that, you shit.â I chuckled seeing he was in fact taking offence to the comment which Keenan snickered at.
Hope was the spitting image of Mason and anyone with eyes could see it. But she was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen and she was just that, perfect. Then Masonâs hands were on my elbows helping me up off the couch as he led me into another room where a bed was. He helped me strip off my clothes, not saying a word when his eyes landed on my still swollen belly. It wasnât as tight anymore and had lost half its shape looking a little more deflated now but he could see what it had been. There were now pink stretch marks that splintered up the sides of my belly and a few smaller ones over my hips.
I watched as his hands reached out, tracing the lines before he laid his hand flat across my belly, a pain filled expression crossing his face as he looked down at his hand. No words were spoken, none that hadnât been said already. It was a miracle we even conceived Hope and something that wonât happen again. I donât think I could handle doing it again if I even had the chance. That house had burned down, along with the memories of my pregnancy. Long months spent locked in a cage. Even now I struggled with the thoughts that what if I didnât get out in time? What if my father had come back? I heard him storm out of the house, heard his truck flying away when something set him off so much that he left without a word.
